Be Better Guys: Put the futon to bedLay Across my Big Bed: You're a big boy now, so it's time for a real bed. This means a mattress and boxspring on a frame. Futons were for college, and if that's all you can afford even today, consider that a basic bed may be only $50 more than a decent futon and a lot more grown up. You don't need a full 4-post canopy number. Just get the basics and when you have a little extra bread, get a headboard. You'll be ahead of most other guys right there.

Bedding Makes the Bed: Get some decent pillows, preferably ones that are down-filled. Not to sound like your Mom here, but don't buy down if you're allergic to the feathers. A down-filled comforter is a good bet in wintertime and a light cotton blanket works in the summer. And invest in some quality, all-cotton sheets with as high a thread count as possible (200 thread count or higher). Without getting into thread count specifics, the higher the count, the softer the cotton. You'll be happy and so will she. Put a mattress pad on the top mattress under the fitted sheet for extra padding and to protect the mattress from, um, stains.

Bedside [Table] Manner: One table is good, but two is better. It gives you a place for your clock, lamp, phone, and reading material.  It's a good place to store stuff when company comes over. Yes, those magazines.

Light it Up: Either for your bedside table or for your dresser, lamps create better mood-lighting than overhead room lights. Lamps with dimmers let you best control the light to your advantage.

Clock In: Let us be the last ones to tell you that life is so much easier if you're on time. We recommend you get an alarm clock with a radio; it's a much more pleasant way to wake up than those jarring buzz or irritating digital alarms. Even better, get something with CD or MP3 capabilities — good for when you're cleaning or, more importantly, entertaining (read: romancing). If you have to put it across the room so you get out of bed to turn it off, then do as you must.

My Dresser, Myself: Like a bed, a dresser is an adult purchase. You're not using milk crates or trunks to store your clothes anymore. You can get a used one or a new one, just get one, and preferably, not the kiddie dresser from the bedroom in which you grew up.

[Hide] Dirty Laundry: Everyone's in a rush these days, but youre gonna have dirty laundry and you need a place to stick it. Get a hamper to put your worn clothes in instead of piling them in the corner or behind the door.

How to See Yourself:  We recommend you get a hanging or wall mirror to ensure that you tie your tie correctly and look good before going out. Just remember, the mirror goes on the wall, not the ceiling.

How to Seat Yourself:  If you have the space, a chair in the bedroom is a great thing to have. Pick the kind of chair that you might put in your living room. Something comfortable, cushy, and inviting to lounge in, not hard plastic or wood that would remind a guest of an elementary school classroom.
