Tools of the Trade: Home Bar |
|
|
In addition to the booze, your bar will need a few items with which to actually make the drinks. How are you going to create a Manhattan without a way to measure the alcohol? Where are you going to mix it? A man has to have the right tool for the job. No blenders necessary, just some glass and steel bar equipment to help you set 'em up for your company to knock 'em back. The things you'll need for a home bar are the following:
- A wine corkscrew
- A shaker cup with a straining lid or a separate strainer
- A mixing glass (a pint glass will work, also)
- A cocktail spoon
- A jigger/pony measure (jigger=1 and 1/2 oz, pony=1 oz.)
- Citrus reamer or juicer*
- Speed pourers for the liquor bottles*
We didn't list a variety of glasses as a necessity. You might consider cocktail glasses if you're a Martini/Manhattan/Cosmopolitan drinker, but most of what we suggest can be served in the same set of glasses you took from your grandma's when you got your first apartment. If you aren't fortunate to work for an employer with these items ready for liberation (again, we apologize to all those restaurants and bars that would no longer have us), you can get glassware inexpensively. Water and juice glasses will do fine for starters, however when finances allow, get yourself a few cocktail glasses. It enhances the experience.
