Nothing like a morning drink to brighten up a day. Particularly on a Tuesday...are we right? If you're fortunate enough to have company at the beginning of the day, then so much the better. For entertaining before 2 pm, a Bloody Mary, screwdriver, or mimosa, are all-time favorites. They can also take the edge off a long night with your favorite libation. Learn the traditional, and not so traditional way, to make these morning-after classics.MimosaAn old standby, the mimosa is perfect for brunch or any early afternoon get-together. Here's the classic recipe:
- 3 oz. chilled champagne
- 3 oz. chilled orange juice
Pour champagne and orange juice into a champagne flute or white wine glass. Some like it over ice, but if the ingredients are chilled, it's unnecessary. Garnish with an orange wheel slice or a strawberry.
Brian and his wife Jill spent one New Year's Eve with David and his wife Amy. Brian and Jill rose to a glorious January 1st morning, which was surprising considering how much they had to drink the night before. A well-laid plan to lie around, eat, watch two movies, and maybe get dressed was threatened by twin hangovers that hit like thunderbolts from an angry god. Fortunately, part of the plan was a bottle of champagne and a gallon of orange juice. They say a hair of the dog that bit you will do the trick, so they had two mimosas and salvaged the day.
Bloody MaryAt the restaurant where David and Brian met in Georgetown, there was a Bloody Mary bar with more fixings than a Ponderosa salad table. What type of vodka: regular, pepper, or lemon flavored? Celery, carrot slice, cucumber wedges? Lemon, lime, or orange slice? Beef consommé? Hell, once shrimp was added, the drink was a chunky tomato away from being shrimp cocktail. The point is that the recipe is infinitely alterable. Start here and experiment at will. The recipe is as follows:
- 1 and 1/2 oz. vodka
- 4 oz. tomato juice
- 1/2 tsp horseradish (not the sauce)
- 3 dashes of Worchester sauce
- Juice of 1/4 lemon (about 1/2 oz.)
- A dash of hot sauce or to taste
- A dash of celery salt
- Ground pepper to taste
- Ice
Combine ingredients in a highball glass over ice. Stir vigorously and garnish with a stalk of celery. |
