Want some quick tips about white wine so you'll be ready when the weather gets warmer and you want something to cool you down? Be Better Guys has some guidance for the guy who wants to learn the basics without getting bogged down in high-falutin winespeak. While there are over 50 major white grape varietals, you’ll come in contact with three to five of them on a restaurant wine list. From lightest to fullest in texture, the grapes are as follows: Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.
For the most part, you never want to drink white wines that are more than three years from the year on the bottle. Some people only drink red and refuse to drink white, citing that it’s just too wimpy. That’s foolish. White wine occupies just as significant a place in the world as red, be it with food or on its own.
Everyday Whites: White wine is a refreshing drink when you want something crisper than beer that’s not carbonated and lighter and less potent than a mixed drink. These wines match well with food, but work on their own and are easy to throw back. We recommend the following:
- Walnut Creek Chardonnay (Chile)
- Concha Y Toro Chardonnay (Chile)
- Bella Sera Pinot Grigio (Italy)
- Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)
- Hugel Pinot Blanc (France).
