Matt Landsberg

Proprietor, Eric Finn Custom Clothiers, Washington, DC

BBG: Matt LandsbergStarting out in structured finance and asset-backed securities, Mattrealized the money isn’t always greener working for someone else. He decided to make a180-degree turn, leave securities(and security) and start Eric Finn Custom Clothiers. Working with and learning from master tailors, Matthas built a successful custom clothing company, catering to the needs of numerous executives, politicians, attorneys, and professional athletes (and anyone else that appreciates perfect fitting clothes). Matt offers BBG some insight on the benefits of making a good impression.

BBG: What things or people inspire your personal style?
ML: I can’t say it’s any person or thing in particular. I get much of my style inspiration just walking on the street or seeing someone on television. I enjoy seeing the creative things people put together. Sometimes they work, sometimes they’re hideous, but they always give me ideas.

BBG: Is how you look important to you? Why?
ML: Absolutely - image is the business I am in. However, beyond my business, whether it’s good or bad, people treat you differently based on how you look. When I’m dressed well, I receive a different level of service, courtesy and respect than when I look like I just rolled out of bed and got dressed with my eyes closed.

BBG: What sort of behavior do you see too much of and what would say to young men about it?
ML: Arrogance. You know it when you see it -- the overwhelming air of someone with an unjustified sense of self-importance. When someone is arrogant, they’re not going to get far in business or personal relationships. There’s no doubt that one can be confident without acting arrogant. A bit of humility and even self-deprecation will always make business and personal relationships evolve easier – it just makes you more likable.

BBG: What unique tip(s) can you give a guy coming up that could make him a “better guy?”
ML: Courtesy and a sense-of-humor. My mother is a real southern bell from Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston has been frequently noted as the friendliest, most polite city in the country. My mom has instilled that trait in me since I was young. After moving to the Mid-Atlantic from the Midwest, I saw a decline in courtesy. People didn’t treat each other with the same level of friendliness. You can go a long way with a few more “pleases,” “thank yous,” smiles and overall courtesy.

Having a sense of humor about things makes the day go by smoother. Trying to see the lighter side of all situations is an easy way to reduce stress. In addition, think about the friends you have with a good sense of humor – isn’t always more fun to be around them than someone that takes things so seriously all the time? Girls typically mention a sense-of-humor as one of the top things they look for in a guy. If you can find funny things in any given situation, share it… people will like you when you make them laugh. Laugh at yourself, laugh with your friends and make others laugh; you’ll be a better guy.

BBG: You’re having someone special over, what would you make for dinner?
ML: If I was looking for a girlfriend and was on a date, I’d make something simple. If she can be happywith the simple things, she’ll love and appreciate it when I really go all out. It’s a good indication as to her expectations and maintenance level. Besides, we should be able to enjoy each other, regardless of the food.

However, if I were having the English Ambassador over, I’d serve pan-seared tuna, with new potatoes, and broccoli rabe with a glass of Pinot Grigio. For dessert: tiramisu.

BBG: What’s your favorite room in your place? Why?
ML: Definitely the bedroom – it’s such a versatile room. That’s where you can unwind, forget about the challenges of the day and relax. OR, it can be a little more exciting – where you make the magic happen!

BBG: If you could have a conversation with one person, who would it be?
ML: Maybe it doesn’t seem as intellectual as choosing a statesman or a scholar or humanitarian, but I’ve always found Sir Richard Branson fascinating and inspirational. The founder of Virgin Records and Virgin Airlines (and a host of other Virgin businesses) knows how to live life (that’s what it’s all about, right?). He’s been a successful entrepreneur, an adventurer, and a philanthropist. Listening to his stories of the early entrepreneurial days (and even today) would be very educational and inspirational. His vast knowledge and experience with life (including risking his own) would be an interesting and fun thing to discuss.

BBG: What do you do/where do you go for fun?
ML: I’ve been a sailor since I was a young kid - I can’t get enough of the open water, blue skies and strong winds. I’ve also been fortunate (or crazy) enough to become a pilot and skydiver (not at the same time!). Other than that, you can’t go wrong having a few drinks with friends (just not before the aforementioned activities!).

BBG: Halle Berry or Rachel McAdams?
ML: I’ve always liked dark hair and dark eyes – maybe to offset my own light features. Halle seems sophisticated and intelligent – that’s something you won’t get tired of after a few years.
