An alternative to belts, suspenders or braces give a more formal
look and can be more comfortable for "the mature man" who's got extra
lovin' around the middle. Suspenders look better with pleated
pants as opposed to flat front pants. They go in and out of style
but they're always appropriate for dressier occasions. If you're
going to play, then here's how If you choose patterned suspenders, then the pattern should be subtle.
Think of it the way you do a tie, matching a small pattern with a
larger one, a solid with a stripe (but not the Mork-inspired rainbow
ones). Let your suspenders complement your tie, not compete with
it, and never buy a boxed tie/suspender set.
Always wear suspenders with a tie. Suspenders with just a dress shirt have an Amish-country thing about them, Jedediah.
Buy braces with tabs that attach to buttons on the inside waistband of your pants. Never, ever, wear braces with
clips. You don't wear a clip-on tie, you shouldn't wear clip-on
braces.
We know you know this but we're going to say it anyway – either a belt or suspenders. You don't need both together, like we don't need American Idol and Star Search.
Back when Brian and David had a band together, they sometimes performed
in suspenders — keep in mind, it was the early 90s. But instead of
looking like funk rockers, they looked like they were dressed for the
next barn raising or butter churning competition. Perhaps that's
why they didn't get a record deal. Wear yours with a suit and tie, not on
stage. |
