Sweaters can be dressed up, but they're
essentially for casual wear. They include crew- or v-necks, long
sleeve polo shirts, turtlenecks, and zip or button
cardigans. There are cotton sweaters that go with linen pants in
May, merino wool turtlenecks beneath suits for dinner parties in
October, and heavy wool fisherman's sweaters to wear with wool cargo
pants in January. Sweaters are great for layering, such as v-necks
on top of collared shirts and polos or zip-front sweaters over
t-shirts. Having about 6 sweaters should give you enough to work
with. Just because they're considered casual
doesn't mean they can't be sharp. Cashmere is warm and soft to the
touch, good looking, and not to mention damn expensive. Merino
wool is a cost efficient alternative which wears well and is very
versatile. Cotton sweaters are inherently more casual than wool,
and can be worn most of the year. Just remember, the same rules
apply as for shirts: sleeves should reach the heel of the hand, the
body should drape near the torso, and the tail should be long enough to
cover your waist. Tuck in it or not -- it's up to you.
Otherwise: Try wearing thinner materials. With the revolution in textiles, you can find a fine gauge sweater warm enough to wear in cold weather without the bulk.
No sweater should reveal any chest hair or man cleavage.Cardigans are making a comeback but be warned, Mister
Rogers, as great a man as he was, was not a fashion icon. However,
zip-front cardigans that have a similar look and feel to warm-up
jackets are cool. Think of Bond on the slopes, unwinding in the
chalet with Holly Goodhead after calmly shooting down a helicopter
while racing downhill on a snowboard; and If you have the option of a banded waist or a straight waist, opt for the latter. The banded waist bunches and makes you look dumpy; Be afraid; be very afraid of the "gift" sweater... One
of the horrific gifts men frequently get during holidays and special
occasions, right up there with ties and cheap cologne. Brian had
a white, teal, and pink "varsity" sweater an ex-girlfriend gave
him. Words cannot describe how bad it was and yet, they continued
to date. He wore it in public at least once and is offering a
reward for those photos, too. The 80s were a bad fashion moment. |
