If you live in a cold climate, you'll need a
winter coat other than your overcoat. Now, you can look like the Michelin Man if you want to,
but we suggest buying something other than a ski jacket to wear around
town. Look, you're grown now, try looking like it. We're
moving you toward an adult wardrobe, which means an adult coat.
Get a car coat or pea coat as a short, cold weather coat. Black and blue are practical colors, but brown and camel are interesting alternatives.
The coat should be wool for warmth, but quilt-lined corduroy, leather, or suede will work as well.
A tweed coat is a good alternative; it's more relaxed than other overcoats and looks great dressed down.
If you're a rustic type, how about getting a lined barn jacket? Just don't wear it with a shirt and tie and you'll be fine.
Jackets
You can make due with one lightweight jacket for the most of the
year. Make sure it's trim, but not so snug that you can't wear a
light sweater underneath it. Many labels now have microfiber
jackets that are cut in many of the popular styles, so consider
familiar styles in unconventional fabrics.
Nothing looks as good as a leather jacket, except perhaps a suede
one. They're great choices for fall. They come in all colors and lengths, but we recommend black, brown, or tan for
leather and suede. Zippers or buttons; car or
waist length; motorcycle or blazer cut; the details are up to
you, but find one that works. David's cognac-colored car coat is
sharp with a turtleneck or sweater and he picked it up for a song at
Filene's Basement. If you keep it clean and go conservative on
the styling, you can have them for a very long time. Because of
price, one will be fine, so choose wisely. Let your lifestyle
dictate which one you get. Other thoughts on jackets:
Buy no jacket that gathers at the waist with elastic, unless you're skydiving or kayaking.
It's hard to go wrong with a denim jacket, unless it doesn't fit. Oh yeah, remember how we said jeans should fit your body? The same holds true for a denim jacket.
For milder weather, look at a cotton or linen jacket with a military cut. It looks sharp and makes you look trim. |
