Be Better Guys: Winter WearAlthough I live in D.C., where it rarely drops below 30 degrees during the day, I travel to places like St. Louis and Dayton, OH, as well as New York and Chicago, among others. It gets cold as hell in those towns and whether you live there or just pass through, you have to be properly equipped when the wind whips right through ya.These five easy pieces are wardrobe staples that have staying power beyond this year’s fashion trends. The following recommendations will be your go-to items not just now, but for years to come.  Plus you can mix them with the clothes you already have. You have to stay warm; you want to look cool. Be Better Guys shows you how.A Fitted Topcoat:  If he had to, a guy can make it through winter with only two coats – a leather coat for casual wear, on dates and at the stadium, and a quality topcoat for whenever you’re dressing up. Even if you don’t wear a suit to the office, a topcoat is stylish and versatile enough that if you wore it with a casual turtleneck sweater and decent jeans, you’d still look sharp and classy. Lately you can find slimmer-cut topcoats for the guy who’s fit and doesn’t want a coat that billows off his body like a bathrobe. Banana Republic has a few options, as does xxxx

Leather Gloves:  You have the coat, you’ve got the boots, but if you look around, a lot of guys seem to skimp on their gloves or mismatch ski or ragg gloves with their suit. When you’re dressing up, complete your scene with rich-quality leather gloves and leave the ragg  gloves for yardwork and dogwalking. Look for gloves with a cashmere lining for warmth and comfort, and a supple leather that is thick enough to resist scuffs and tears. Black and brown are standards, but orange, yellow, or hunter green can diversify your look. Find them at Gloves-Online.com, Berlin Glove Company and if you feel rich, Coach.

Colorful Scarf:  Winter tends to be dark, grey, bleak.  So if you wear a dark topcoat, dark shoes, a dark hat, black gloves, you’re contributing to that bleak feeling. But if you add a shot of color to the world, say, through a bright, colorful scarf around your frigid neck, not only will it serve the function of keeping the heat in, but I will personally bet you that, with the right scarf, you will start conversations with attractive women without even trying. I’ve gotten several “I like your scarf!” comments while standing in an elevator or on the subway.  Now, if a piece of clothing can be a conversation starter, I don’t need any more justification than that. Cashmere is softer, but more expensive, than other wools. It’s worth it. Check out this one from Fozieri, the colorful patterns from Burberry,

Plaid Wool Pants:  If you haven’t noticed, plaid is showing up all over in jackets, vests, ties and hats. It’s also showing up in dress pants. Plaid pants in the summer look affected; plaid pants in the winter look savvy. While it might be tricky to wear plaid pants to the office, wearing them out on the town, on a date or for weekends gives your look a uniqueness that corduroys and jeans can’t. Not to mention, getting wool pants keeps the warmth in when walking down Michigan Avenue or Broadway with your woman. Make sure they’re lined so you’re not bent over, scratching your legs from that itchy wool experience.

Cashmere V-Neck:
A man can never have enough cashmere sweaters. Why?  Because cashmere’s about the most comfortable cold-weather material you can find. The problem is that cashmere was only available to the upper-crusties because it was so expensive. Now, cashmere of varying quality is available in many price ranges, and will make you forget about wool when the temp drops below 40 degrees. Wear it under a tweed sportcoat, with an open-collared shirt, shirt and tie, or even casually with jeans over a t-shirt. Just sing the Zeppelin song to yourself so the rest of us can live in peace, ok?

Bonus Easy Piece – The Wool Necktie:  A guy should dress seasonally.  Meaning in the summer, he can wear linen and cotton, and in the winter he can wear wool. Even in a tie. A wool necktie adds some texture to your style and goes great with an oxford shirt, a tweed sportcoat, or even your plain old grey business suit.  It’s a more casual look, so if it’s a high-profile business meeting you’re heading to, a wool tie may not be the best choice. But if it’s casual Friday (or Thursday or Wednesday) or you want to add some punch for your hot date Saturday night, put a wool tie on knotted loosely around your neck and give her something to lead you around her apartment by.
