Hair Hair Page Two

Hair Cuts and Maintenance

If you shave your head or want something simple like a buzz cut, any barber can do that for you. But if you want a more stylish option, consider going to a hair stylist.
Don't cheap out on your haircut. It says as much about the kind of guy you are as your clothes do. If you don't have a barber/stylist, ask a friend who has a good cut. Or better yet, go to a salon with many cute, young women in it and book an appointment.  They'll take good care of you there.

If a hairstyle takes longer to get right than it does to button your shirt, get a new style.  We prefer short hairstyles above all–classic, short cuts (particularly if you're hair is thinning), and not one that says "Semper Fi" (unless you serve in the military, in which case we salute you, brother).  Along those lines, Brian goes with a fully bald head and shaves his using clippers once every five days.

A word of advice: if you are losing your hair, don't do a comb-over, and don't try growing a ponytail.  Just cut it low. If you shave your head, rub a soothing lube like tea tree oil or Kemi oil into your scalp to give it some sheen and be proud of your bald dome. People are much more forgiving of the bald these days - a hearty thank you to Michael Jordan for his basketball wizardry and his paving the way for the follically disinclined to look sharp. Evolve, adapt, or perish, man.

You'll  also want find the right products, such as gel or wax, to keep your hair looking good. We don't advocate using lots of products for your hair; just quality ones. David uses shampoo, conditioner, and a creme for styling–that's it.  Simple.  Not fussy, not expensive. You have a myriad of choices in hair products, enough to make you want to shave it all off or roll it up in beeswax and grow dreads.  Let's walk through the options so you can identify what works with your head:

Be Better Guys: Pomade can help you hold your lookGels hold hair in shape, but make it stiff, not soft and textured;

Wax is useful for wavy or straight hair and leaves hair with a more natural feel than gel;

Creams
work well for longer hair by keeping it manageable, lending shine, while maintaining a natural look; and

Pomades are recommended for the brothers out there and others with short, curly, thick hair.

You can find hair products in many places -- at your barbershop, at a salon, or at supermarkets and drugstores.  Sal the Barber's got stuff that worked for your Dad, but you're probably not a Wildroot Hair Cream guy, so you may have to move on. The stuff you can get at a salon is more expensive and is typically not widely available–these are considered "professional" products, thus they cost "professional" prices. Your friendly neighborhood CVS drugstore, Target, or Safeway will carry products like Aussie, American Crew, or Matrix.
When Brian and David were in the band together...
Brian turned David on to Dax Wave and Groom for holding his hair in place while in a band together.  Normally used by African American men, David began using it whether he was performing  on stage or going to work.  He became addicted. It took at least three shampoo rinses and a conditioner treatment to wash the stuff out.  Eventually, David had to kick the Dax habit and move on to something gentler for styling his "mousse-terpiece."
