Face it: Shaving

As a guy, there are some things you have to do: pump the gas, use the plunger, and shave your face. It is the harshest thing your face goes through, save 15 rounds in the ring with Bone Crusher Smith. There are some basic steps that make up a decent shave. We've tried to skip out on some of these from time to time, (tried using an old blade or dry shaving,) and believe us when we say, "Holy sh-- , that hurts!!" The following steps are the ones we follow to make it a more pleasant experience: Shave either in the shower or directly afterward. Steam and warm water will soften your beard and remove the morning puffiness we all experience.
Choose a shaving cream, gel, or soap that works for you. The point is to soften the hair follicles for an easier shave. Hair growth, density, and personal preference will determine what to use.
If you have a tough beard, consider using a shaving oil to prep your beard. This also helps to prevent razor burn.
Multi-blade razors work most efficiently for many guys, but for African American men and those with curly hair, single blade or slim twin razors help prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Change the blade every three to four shaves. Dull blades are the fastest way to an uncomfortable shave.
Rinse your face with cool water to close your pores and gently pat dry. Apply toner and your face lotion for a soft, crisp mug. Avoid aftershaves, which typically contain alcohol and will dry out your skin.
Keep a styptic pencil handy in case you do cut yourself. It helps the cut clot quickly, so as not to ruin your shirt or walk around with toilet paper sticking to your cheek. Toilet paper is not for your face, it's for your… well, forget it.
Nice Shave, Nancy Boy Brian's Aunt Rose, recently visited and gave him Moulton Brown Supershave Olibanum as a gift. As she watched his eyes light up, she noted that several other family members thought it would go over big with him because he was "a bit of a priss" about his appearance. And this was from a woman he likes. Once his rugged pride healed, he used the hell out it. It's the best shaving cream he's used to date. There is a wide range of quality facial products -- from Nivea, Gillette, and Neutrogena, to higher-end products like Kiehl's, Anthony Logistics, Zirh, and Moulton Brown -- online and in stores near you. Drugstores will carry most of the former products and they're a great, affordable place to start; department stores and specialty shops will carry the more costly items with natural ingredients and have people who can help you with your face, or you can order online if you're just plain shy. Even Whole Foods Market has an array of face cleansers, face lotions, toners, and shaving creams for guys that are affordable, plus there are always cute girls shopping there. See our Grooming Resources page at the end of this section for a list of suppliers. Facial Hair There are many camps of thought about what growth on your face is acceptable and/or enhances your overall style. We break it down for you as follows:
Cleanly shaven face – a good choice for Monday through Friday, but we have been known to give our faces a rest on Saturday and Sunday.
Light beard – if you wear one, keep it short and keep it neat.
Mustache – If you a fight fires and you wear a mustache, then fight on, brother. As for the rest of you, lather up.
Goatee – A popular choice for young guys (kind of like Intro to Facial Hair 101). Not everyone can pull this off. Brian's been known to wear one, but not everyone is Brian.
Long Sideburns – For the Average Joe, mutton chops aren't a good look. So, unless you're in a psycho-billy band, don't let go beyond your earlobes. Any Other Form of Facial Hair as yet Undescribed – lather up.

- Just explain the rules of the sport to her so she can follow along.
- Don't show up to work wrinkled. Either iron yourself or take your clothes to the drycleaner.
