Your regular routine for caring for your face probably doesn’t include face scrub. Hell, it may not even include putting on any moisturizing lotion. For that matter, you may not even be using soap! Or water! You may just look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say, “Another good day in the books!” and trundle off to bed.

If that’s you, you may want to go back a ways with us to some earlier articles and get yourself a face regimen for that one day when you look at yourself and think, “HOLY SH--!  When’d I get so old and crusty-lookin’?" Be Better Guys has evaluated some of the leading face scrubs on the market and we’ve ranked them in order of preference. Read on . . . .
Face scrub is part of that regimen to slough off the dead skin cells that shaving doesn’t get rid of and to deep clean your pores so you don’t keep getting zits. A face scrub is basically a creamy sandpaper and you only use it a few nights a week over your entire face, paying particular attention to your forehead, nose, and chin (the oiliest parts of most faces). A face scrub can be too abrasive for everyday use, so 2-3 times a week is enough. Use it before you wash with a face wash and you’ll see that the results are real. You’ll a little less waxy, a little less gray (not staying up playing poker online with a MacCallan by your side also helps). When used before shaving, face scrubs can reduce the occurrence of ingrown hair.

Anthony Logistics Face Scrub, $20, 4oz: This fragrance-free cream is gentle and uses micro-beads to “roll” over the skin to get it clean. A bit rougher than some, but whatever it does, the Anthony Logistics works. It’s the best product I tested.

Neutrogena Men Razor Defense Face Scrub, $7, 4.2 oz, BBG Better Bet: The Neutrogena Men series is a favorite of mine, because the quality’s great, the price is right, and you can get their stuff at any drugstore, so there's no need to go into specialty men’s shops for a $20 scrub (No offense, Anthony Logistics). Creamy like a paste, but drier than most I’ve tried, and with a minor amount of grit that’s not too harsh on your face, the Neutrogena is our Better Bet, with all the benefits at 1/3 the price.

Sharp’s Foaming Face Scrub, $20, 4.2 oz, BBG Better Bet: The more products I try, the more I like the Sharp’s products, and this scrub calling itself a face wash is great for every-other-day use. It’s thick enough to slough off the dead skin cells but not too harsh to feel like I’ve just been broadsided by a belt sander. It washes of with just enough tingle to make me feel like I’m getting some positive results for my effort.  At this price, it’s actually a step up in quality from the Neutrogena so either one makes them our Better Bets.

Billy Jealousy Sucker Punch Face Scrub, $18, 3.5 oz: This gray paste is more like a facial mask than a scrub, too harsh to use more than once or twice a week. I do like the stuff, but I’m not convinced I’d need this and another face scrub to keep my mug in order.

Zihr Scrub, $17, 3.4 oz:  Zirh did its usual “in case you don’t use any soap, we over-fragrance our products to keep you covered!” shtick with their scrub. The combination of overpowering fragrance and some chemical in there that was exceptionally drying left my face pink and smelling like shavings of Irish Spring, neither of which fit with my MO. I only used the Zihr twice before I gave it to my brother as a gift. You can do better than this, fellas.

Lab Series Skincare for Men, Invigorating Face Scrub, $18, 3.4 oz: The Lab Series product is literally like liquid sand – it looks like it, it feels like it, like they bottled some of Jones Beach without the beach towels and screaming children. Tan in color with bits of black and white grit, the Lab Series didn’t “invigorate” my face so much as sandpaper it with some 240-grit. I was literally red-in-the-face after using this stuff. I guess it’s good if you have layers of caked-on crap on your face, like makeup, but I got cut from my clown audition with the circus, so this stuff is entirely too harsh for me.

Listen, fellas, you don’t have to use a face scrub if you don’t want to. And you don’t have to wax your car before you take it out on Saturday night, either. You want to look better?  This stuff works. I recommend you figure out what you can afford, pick up a tube, and take the gray out…of your face!

  • An e-mail thank you is nice.  A phone call is nicer.  A handwritten note is class.
  • Show both a ½ inch of your cuff and collar under your suit jacket for a polished look.
  • Next time she’s over: Turn off the TV. And the lights.  Light some candles.  Put on Marvin Gaye.  Touchdown.
  • Changing your razor blade every week to reduce razor burn on your face and neck.
  • Stop grabbing your crotch.  Enough with all the ballhandling already, Carmelo.
