We decided to go with classics this season. With the return of preppy and the 80s, BBG wanted to give you contemporary options that will see you through more than one summer. If you’re like us, you’re probably not interested in chasing trends, but you don’t want to look like your grandpa, either. We’ve got you covered with our Five Easy Pieces for Summer 2009.
Unconstructed blazers: You’ve been seeing them for a while—skeleton jackets with minimal or no lining and no padding. The strength of the unconstructed blazer is that it’s built to have all the style and form of a sport jacket or blazer with a more relaxed fit and flow. A cotton, linen, or microfiber one is perfect for the more relaxed days of summer, either at the office or out for an evening. And at this late date in the season, the prices on these are right! Check out this one from Raffi, for $89; or the off-white linen version from J.Press for $252; and finally, the Gap offers an unlined navy cotton jacket for $69.

Casual Slip-Ons: Sometime you need something to cover your feet and not much else. Not a sandal, but not a pair bucks, either. Just a pair of shoes to slip your dogs into, whether heading to the wine store or over to the in-laws for a barbeque. The Frye Bleeker Slip-on marries the form of a boat shoe (don’t call it a come back!) with a more structured loafer, $175; Lacoste’s canvas slip-on is a more hip option, especially if you prefer sneakers, $80; and the rope-soled espadrille has reappeared, a summer shoe if there ever was one. This Sperry Top-Sider Largo is built for the beach or the backyard, $70.

Trim Shorts: You might have heard that cargo shorts are done. If you think I’m kidding, see the fire sale Macy’s is having on them. By next week, it’ll be handing them out like sale flyers. Now, the move is trim, flat-front, Bermuda-length shorts (to the knee). The trimmer, longer short looks nicer than the baggy ones of a few years back, and cleaner than the cargo version, which makes them easy to jazz up some (see jacket above). Try the mini-check version from Nautica, $40; the Marc Ecko Splelunker short makes a good look for hanging out, $48; and Penguin has a seersucker pair in dark indigo with red and white striping, $89.

Brightly-Hued Shirts: This sounds like a duh moment, but guys, are relatively speaking, adverse to color. Oh, we’ll talk good game, but when push comes to shove, there’s an abundance of blue, gray, and white in our shirt selection, even in summer. It’s true and if you don’t believe me, look into you closet. After bowing your head in shame, try these alternatives: the Pink Mast linen short-sleeved shirt from, who else, Thomas Pink, $120; Tommy Hilfiger’s Vineyard shirt in island yellow, $38; and Johnston & Murphy offers up this orange-striped number, $68 (plus they’re running a sale on them right now).

Aviator Sunglasses: You can’t do summertime (or any other time) without them. With the return of larger frames, we choose to go classic with the aviator – masculine, practical, and stylish. First, the DKNY silver framed, gray lenses version, with the double bridge is a solid pair at $90; Oliver Peoples’ Farrell 64 in an oversized square frame are sharp, but pricey at $400; and the classic Ray-Ban aviator in your choice of metals and lenses at $129.

As always, these recommendations are to augment our other seasonal suggestions from other seasons to give you a well-rounded closet of great clothes and accessories without running out to buy a new wardrobe every year. You can have all five items for about $300 dollars, even cheaper if you take advantage of sales and discounts. Happy Father’s Day to all of the Dads out there and enjoy the summer.
