J.J. is concerned that he's getting conflicting information about antiperspirants and wanted us to clear it up.
Q: You mentioned on your site about using a deodorant with an anti-perspirant. I subscribe to "Men's Health" magazine, and one article mentioned that the aluminum hydroxide causes yeallow stains on t-shirt under arms. I'm using plain old Old Spice deoderant, with no anti-perspirant, and the t-shirts stay white.

Any thoughts??

A: J.J.,

You raise a good point about antiperspirants. The various forms of aluminum salts used as active ingredients in antiperspirants actively block the pores of your skin, to prevent sweating, but stain the cotton of your undershirt (and current research indicates it might have be having an effect on our bodies, as well). Whereas we might argue that many men and women get a bit ripe due to hair, sweat, and body heat, if you don't sweat excessively under your arms, then the antiperspirant isn't necessary. A good deodorant should take care of any smell and the undershirt is there to catch the sweat. We might need to reconsider our stand on this. Thanks for the email.

  • It’s eyebrowS, not eyebrow.  Separate ‘em.
  • Invest in a cocktail strainer.  Should cost you under $5.
  • Show some self-control.  Let others finish speaking and enough interrupting already.
  • You’ve got the belt loops.  Now wear the belt.
  • Keep your music at the office low.  Not everyone wants to hear Fergie at 8:30 in the morning.

ImageFall means crisp air, football, and suede for the weekend.  Suede lace-up ankle boots in brown or black are a great change from sneakers when kicking around town.  Casually elegant, they look cool with jeans, chinos, or corduroy pants. Get a pair at Nordstrom’s, Banana Republic or J Crew.
