Tres' got serious shoe needs: he has a bad hip and needs supportive shoes, but isn't interested in the orthodepic look. We go to a friend of BBG (and podiatrist) to make some suggestions.
Q:  Hello gentlemen,

Thank you for a great site. I have a shoe issue I hope you might help me with, specifically brown semi-casual work shoes. My IT work environment doesn't typically require me to wear dress shoes (though I frequently wear Allen Edmonds cap toes) and usually a Rockport-type shoe is perfectly fine. In the past I've worn Kenneth Cole shoes, but the heels really do feel like cement blocks after a short period and my Golden Gate brown shoes, while I love their look, are nearly intolerable. (I should add that I got a hip replacement at the tender age of 35 so comfort is now a greater factor).

Do you have any suggestions for specific less-formal and comfortable brown shoes that might fit the bill? I feel Rockports, while comfortable, are just too plain (though I am not what one would call super-trendy).

I appreciate any help you might provide.

Thanks!

Tres

A:  Tres,

Thanks for the note and the kind words. I checked out Comfort One Shoes, renowned for well-made, comfortable shoes in many styles, but to tell the truth, save for the Mephisto Macario, nothing struck me as a good mix of style and practicality. And, I felt we could do better.

A quick call to Dr. Ben Peal, podiatrist in Washington, DC, netted us a few suggestions. He recommended Johnston & Murphy with Vibra-soles at Jos.A Banks, Ecco, and Natural Step (which are, frankly, ugly and I won't pass along), feeling they were comparable to Rockport, with Johnston & Murphy being more upscale and Ecco being pretty stylish. He likes that Cole-Haan has a whole line of shoes with Nike Air Techonolgy (using an air bladder for cushion), but Dr. Pearl also said consider any shoe using a multi-density foam for the sole to give you the necessary cushion for that hip of yours.

The prices run from $110 to $300+. Considering your needs, I thought this was a realistic price range. Tres, thanks again for writing and hope that these suggstions help.

  • Buy one pair of shoetrees and put them in the shoes you wore that day.
  • Wear your trenchcoat only on rainy, snowy days.  Wear a topcoat when the sun shines.
  • Find all the socks you’ve got that have holes.  Toss ‘em out.
  • Use some styling product to maintain your hair.  Don’t use too much.  You’ll look like a slimy mook.
  • Got gas?  Do it in the restroom, not in the office or in the restaurant.  Thanks...really.
