We at Be Better Guys always think this is an interesting topic of discussion, mainly because people don’t always do things, wear things, and act certain ways for themselves. They sometimes do, wear and act out of character for someone else specifically or in general, to see if shaking things up will give them an edge. Men do it, women do it. Most women have are typically nurtured from girl-age to ‘let it grow’. Some girls have bobs but most have long, flowing hair.
When girls become adults and have their own stylists and style, the choice is in front of them–keep it long or cut it, maybe cut it way short? “What would guys like? What would I like? Sure, Rhianna had it short, Alyssa Milano went short a few years back, but is that for me?”
Elle wrote an article a few years ago that unanimously found that men prefer longer hair. I disagree My wife not only cut it way short, but she’s dyed it platinum blonde for the last decade. Women approach my wife with an emphatic “I love your hair!” The question I have is “Do you love it so much that you’d cut it that short for yourself or do you love it that someone else had the balls to cut it short?”
Cutting hair short for women is a definite statement of confidence, because it goes against norm. I love that my wife’s hair is short, almost boyish without being, well, softball catcher short. There’s short and sexy and then there’s butch, a line a woman shouldn’t purposely cross.
Whatever a woman does with her hair, there will be reactions from her community. The Elle author said fewer men hit on her, but they were men of quality and uniqueness who appreciated her look because it showed such individuality.
What’s your take?
