Ask The Guys: Wet Shave with an Electric Razor?

From New York, we received a question about using an electric razor. So many of the electric razors out there now promise that you can lather up and use the razor. One guy is testing out a new electric razor and wanted to try it with a wet shave . He asked “What shaving cream would you recommend for this?”

The Guys: I think the whole wet/dry electric razor is an attempt to keep those guys who buy into the ease and convenience of technology as regular customers in the booming shaving market. But, I digress. Last year for our Christmas gift extravaganza, we featured the Norelco 1250X and wet-tested it as well. At the time, I was using glycerine-based shave creams and found that they were generally easier to clean out of the floating heads. I also tried using a shave oil to reduce the friction of a dry shave.

While I liked the Art of Shaving creams during the tests, Barney Bishop of Fragrant Moments, suggests that a gel or lotion is a better option than a cream. They don’t require as much water to do the job and are glycerine based as well. I recommend Sharps Kid Glove shave gel as a brushless alternative, for $13 for 5 oz and Anthony Logistics shave gel, for $17. He also mentioned not to use a shave oil, as the oil can damage the motor of the razor.

  1. Barney A. Bishop says:

Thanks for the shout Brian. As a youngman growing up, I followed my dad and did the dry, electric shaving thing. I just started wet shaving, still with an electric razor, and it has never been this close. I may never go back.
