Surrounding the movies Star Trek and Avatar, there was all kinds of buzz about Zoe Saldana, the New Jersey-born, Queens-raised, Dominican Republic-reared actress. That is, when she wasn’t being mistaken for Thandie Newton — well , there was a void needing filling in the business for a slender, sexy, woman of African descent while Thandie tended to husband and child. And there was good reason, because Saldana is an ingratiating presence on the screen — just ask Nick Cannon in Drumline. But she’s more than a pretty face. Her interviews reveal she’s a sharp cookie with a healthy appreciation for the diversity of men.
Saldana’s Uhuru almost made a generation of guys forget about Nichelle Nichols (and if you saw the original Star Trek series, you know that’s hard to do). She’ll be reprising the role in the upcoming sequel, but she plans to get in on the ass-kicking fun (see her in The Losers to know she’s ready). Her turn in Avatar caught people’s attention as well, but my favorite is her as the witch in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Didn’t know that was her, did you? If you think you’ve seen all there is of her, think again. in 2010 alone she has 4 movies out or coming out. Alas, for all of her candor and hotness, she’s recently come off of the block, becoming engaged to long-time boyfriend Keith Britton earlier this summer. For more on Zoe, read on.
